“Live Bold!” Contest: Knock Something Off Your Bucket List: CLOSED

I don’t believe in bucket lists. Mostly because I don’t believe in organization. I mean, have you seen my towel closet? No? Good. How about my hair? Right. Case in point.

Bucket lists have always bothered me because they seem like an artificial way to define what “living” life really means.  They create this expectation that if you die without seeing the Eiffel Tower you haven’t lived. Honestly, that overrated, skyline blight shouldn’t define what life means for you or anyone. Of course, only people who’ve seen the Eiffel Tower can call it an “overrated, skyline blight” to the rest of you that’s Mr. Eiffel Tower.

I’ve always believed that life itself is an adventure. And whether you are standing on the edge of Masada or on the edge of a cornfield, living happens where you are, not where you want to be.

Perhaps, I think this because I’ve moved so many places and none of them were places I wanted to go. Before college, I lived in five different homes in six different states and when I got married, life brought me here to Iowa, to the edge of a cornfield. It’s not what I imagined my life would be. None of these places are places I would have chosen and yet, I love being here.

Here in Iowa, I’ve faxed North Korea, climbed through a roof in an epic flood to save artwork, been yelled at by Terry Gross, and flirted with Masad. And that’s all just in my town.  Adventure isn’t where you are it’s what you are.

So, while I don’t believe in bucket lists, I believe in being wild. In screaming. In being afraid. And saying “yes.” I like life the best when I’m teetering on the edge, which for me usually means drinking wine and playing “Scrabble” at the SAME TIME.

I’m pretty crazy like that.

But now, I’m going to take the crazy up a notch and learn how to fly.

Not like Peter Pan or Jerry Garcia, but like Maverick. If Maverick flew a little Cessna at a small airport in Minneapolis. Then, just LIKE him.

Thanks to Pepperidge farms and their very delicious Jingo’s crackers (Lime and Sweet Chili, might be my favorite) I’m going to hop into a plane and steer that sucker into the wild blue yonder.

Jealous?

Don’t be. Because they are also offering you an opportunity to live bold with a $150 gift card to Cloud9Living.com where you can book your own adventure. What do you have to do? Not much. Just comment below and let me know one thing you’ve always wanted to do. On Sept 22, I’ll use random.org to select a winner from the comments. That is it.

I mean, you could “Like” LyzLenzdotcom on Facebook, follow me on Twitter, or spam your friends with this post. I would love that. Especially the spam part.

But really, all you have to do is comment and you are entered. And I can’t wait to see what you choose!

Also, I need to point out that Cloud9Living has a DaVinci’s Gold Scavenger Hunt. And ermahger I would mother-freaking-love to do that. I mean LOVE to do that. When I saw it on the site, I shrieked and wet myself and Dave came over and immediately knew what I was excited about. “No,” he said. “I love you but you are not spending $1,880 on a fictional quest for imaginary gold.”

I pick a winner on September 22, so you better enter now. Or else…Well. Maybe the Mayans were right.

If you couldn’t tell, I have been compensated for this post by Pepperidge Farm, but the opinions, the experiences and the words are all mine!  I turn down lots of offers for reviews and contests, but this is one I am proud to have on my site.

I would like to go to Ethiopia, and by Ethiopia, I mean the Ethiopian food tour in Washington DC (given budgetary constraints of prize).

Well, for the first comment you are already winning at hilarity.

Move in with my boyfriend! And we’ll be checking that off tonight after we bring over the last few bags!

    • lyzl

Nice! I think you can set your sights higher. Like move in with my boyfriend and then TAKE A SHOWER! That seems bold.

I would love to bicycle from coast-to-coast.

      This doesn’t shock me.

Oh, we needed something that would shock you? How about a barcode tattoo on the bottom of my foot?

        • lyzl

          HA! Still not shocked.

Honestly, there are too many things to name! 1) Go with the hubs on a trip to Europe and see where our families are from. 2) On said trip, experience nightlife in Prague, since I was cheated out of that experience the last time I was there. 3) Visit every state in the US. 4) Stay at an all inclusive resort/cruise. I know you said one thing. I don’t care. I’M A REBEL LIKE THAT.

And the flying thing? So, so freaking cool. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to learn to fly. My uncle was a pilot and if he were still alive, I’d TOTES have my flying license by now :) Color me jealous!

    • lyzl

      Oh Prague! PRAGUE!

I too was robbed of a trip to Prague, because I was super poor in college. I feel like if I had gone, my life would be totally different. Like a Sliding Doors kind of thing. Like I wouldn’t even be married to Dave, instead I’d be living in Moscow with furry man named Georges and drink vodka while wearing leather pants.

Meh. Prague was our least favorite city on the honeymoon – too much overly pushy in your face tourist crap. Food was damn good though. And if you’ve never experienced Black Light Theatre? Worth checking out. Bizarre.

        Also? I am an asshole.

I want to visit NYC. I’m 28 and have never been to “The Big Apple.” I’m sure it’s exactly what I see from Real Housewives of New York City on Bravo. Exactly.

    • lyzl

It is! Also, Vincent d’Onofrio solves all the crime.

Gosh one thing? ONE?! Hubs and I have been talking about taking a road trip and either circumnavigating Lake Michigan, or driving old Route 66. Being able to do one or the other would be wonderful.

    • lyzl

Oh Old Route 66 seems like a fun trip. Me and Michigan don’t really get along, though. I’m not sure why.

    • http://www.kimskitchensink.com Kim’s Kitchen Sink

I also have dreams of driving old Route 66! What is it about that road that makes us want to get our kicks there?

  • Fwmcgee

I would love to skydive! Even though I have a horrible fear of heights:(

    • lyzl

Nothing cures a fear of heights more than plunging from a plane.

I would LOVE to travel anywhere just me and the hubs, but what I’d like to do most of all is learn to SCUBA dive. I took the class when I was in Jr. High and FAILED, so I need to try it again. Once I pass then I’ll dive with the GREAT WHITES…after I’ve completed my will and bought a nice life insurance policy ;-)

Saw a video once of a hangglider landing on top of a tiny little mesa someplace in the southwest canyon country. Probably no other way to get up there without a helicopter. I thought, “that’s awesome! But, what’s he going to do if his glider blows away while he’s admiring the view?”

  • jesse gandy

I would love to canoe to the coast with my husband! (Dallas to Gulf). We are overdue for an adventure of some sort!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500191224 Eliot Landrum

      Is that possible?!

      • jesse gandy

just read about a dallas teacher that did it, takes 2 weeks, im sure you have to port your canoe at parts.

Is it sad that I would probably choose one of the ones in San Francisco? Because there are tons of things to do around here that I’ve never done? See also: I am cheap.

I have always wanted to travel to India and/or Japan. Both have totally different cultures than the US, and I’d like to see them. Plus, both have super amazing foods. :)

  • Meg Sova-Tower

I dunno….flying a plane sounds pretty darn cool…I’d like to skydive or maybe zip line in Panama….

  • Apryl Griffth

I’ve always wanted to get braces but realize I need to save for my kids braces :)

  • Krystle Lacher

Well obviously I’d choose to travel through South Africa because I can’t think of anything more adventurous. But due to the monetary limitations of both myself and the gift card I’d love to do one of the food tours. If you can’t do…eat! It’s practically as good.

What a great post! I so agree with you that “living happens where you are, not where you want to be”. Wise words! :) I definitely follow that philosophy…having said that, on my bucket list is a trip to the Amazonian Rainforest. I would LOVE to camp out there in the wild and truly be away from the noise of the everyday and experience nature. It would be epic!

Honest to goodness….my bucket list includes designing/building (have built for us) our own home…complete with a library a warddrobe entrance and light given off by lampposts. The travel bucket list would have to include Seattle.

You crack me up! I love, love, love Top Gun! It’s before Tom Cruise went and got all crazy. Have fun on your adventure!

Medical marijuana vs narcotics? I would like to help people who suffer from pain, which often results in pill addiction, and help them get on the right track by using medical marijuana to relieve them from their daily hell in order to give them a “normal” life. There is too much evil in this world; helping just one person can make a huge difference.

    • lyzl

That’s a pretty hefty bucket list. Do you have any easy items on there like “Search for DaVinci’s Gold?”

  • http://notsolittlethings.blogspot.com/ stephanie3

Wait, you got yelled at by Terry Gross?

  • http://www.facebook.com/crjen Jen Visser

Alaska. I want to visit Alaska.

  • Noelle

I also don’t believe in bucket lists, because for me, planning to do something is the first step to failure (or at least serious procrastination) but I have always thought it was cool when people have a list of things they want to do, like visit all the Major League Ballparks or something. If I did something like that, I think it would be to visit all the wineries in Iowa (there are tons!) or maybe all the breweries. Because, obviously booze > baseball.

    • Noelle

P.S. Tim is learning to fly currently through Rockwell, so…wanna go halvsies on a plane so you guys can fly me anywhere I want on my whim?

  • http://superduperfantastic.com/ suki

Fun! Travel’s already in my blood, no such thing as a bucket list. If anything, I’d keep all my items in a fanny pack…

  • Kristina @ My Diary Entry

I really want to get a tattoo (I think), it’s definitely on my Bucket List. I have made 2 appointments and I chickened out both times. Maybe it just isn’t meant to be :-)

I’ve always wanted to lose weight the right way, by eating right and working out – not by some unhealthy, starve myself diet. I want to honestly and truly work for the body I want so I can be proud that I achieved something. I’m always complaining about how I used to be skinny and then how having a baby has turned me into a 21 year old with a kangaroo pouch. I need to stop complaining and start acting!

  • Ariel Sayers

I am terrified of heights but I’ve always wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride. I think it’d be a cool way to face my fear and see some beautiful scenery at the same time!

I greatly enjoyed the Pepperidge Farms mention. I shall go out and buy a box now!

Excellent. My mind control is working.
